World Embryologist Day: IVF is not the last resort for infertility, but in many cases it is a solution

country’s capital Delhi About 2.60 crore people live in the diverse and cosmopolitan culture. Despite this, surprisingly, Delhi has been described as the state with the lowest fertility rate in the entire country. recently done National Family Health Survey-5 According to (NFHS-5), the total fertility rate (TFR) in Delhi is 1.5. The thing to note is that infertility Cases are increasing continuously and in today’s era its effect is visible very much. According to the new report of NFHS-5, the TFR of the urban population is 2.1.

In today’s era, IVF is a ray of hope for the couples facing the problems of infertility, who are planning for a child. With this, both the problem is diagnosed and its treatment is done. Apart from this, IVF also helps in recognizing problems related to fertilization and embryo development. IVF is recommended for the process of fertilization, where eggs and sperm are combined in vitro (a type of test tube). It is a type of fertility assisted technique, which is used for the treatment of infertility and for pregnancies under surrogacy.

IVF not successful in every case

Dr. Shobha Gupta, CEO, Mother’s Lap IVF Centre, New Delhi, said, “One of the most common myths about IVF is that IVF is a last resort in cases of infertility and should be tried when a couple is trying their best. Have done it and could not succeed. This is a myth, because sometimes it is not possible for a woman to conceive. Due to tubal blockage, women are also unable to conceive. IVF is certainly the first option for such women, but not the last.

Infertility in 19 percent of women is due to PCOD and PCOS

During the pandemic in 2020, the report found that PCOS was particularly high and proved to be the second leading cause of female infertility after tubal factor.

During the last five years, there has been a significant increase in PCOS and tubal factor. In other cases related to fertility of women, the problem of low ovarian reserve was seen in women aged 25 to 34 years, followed by endometriosis.

Delhi-NCR has seen an astonishing rise in cases of tubal factor affecting fertility of women compared to southern, eastern or other parts of the country.

71% of couples preferred to self-cycle. After this, 29 percent of the couples expressed confidence in the donor cycle. This shows that even in the most challenging cases, couples use advanced science and technology in embryology to self-cycle their own eggs and sperm.

low sperm count in men

Talking about the issues related to the fertility of men in Delhi-NCR, the cases of azoospermia are getting more. This is a condition in which there is no sperm in the male. This is the biggest reason behind infertility among men of Delhi-NCR. Azoospermia is the cause of 25% of infertility cases. Next comes the number of asthenoteratospermia, which is responsible for 21 percent of infertility cases. Astenoteretospermia means that the sperm motility is low.

“The second myth about IVF is that it is a very painful process. That’s not true at all. If you choose the right center and follow the doctor’s instructions and follow the right procedure, then there is no pain at all.’

Why is IVF used?

Sometimes, IVF is recommended as the primary treatment for infertility in women above 40 years of age. IVF can be done even if you are suffering from certain health related problems. For example, if you or your partner has fallopian tube damage or blockage, IVF may be an option.

If there is a fallopian tube damage or blockage, there is a problem in the fertilization of the egg or the embryo reaching the uterus.

Ovulation disorder: If ovulation is low or not at all, then the number of eggs for fertilization is less.

Endometriosis: Endometriosis occurs when tissue lining the uterus implants and grows outside the uterus. These often affect the functioning of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.

Uterine Fibroids: The early tumors found in the uterus are called fibroids. It is quite common to meet them in women of 30 to 40 years of age. Fibroids can cause problems with the implantation of fertilized eggs.

old tubal vasectomy or removal

Tubal ligation is a type of sterilization in which the fallopian tubes are cut or blocked to prevent pregnancy permanently. If you want to conceive after tubal ligation, an alternative to tubal ligation reversal surgery can be IVF.

Poor sperm production or function: Low sperm concentration, poor sperm movement or abnormality in the shape and form of the sperm can make it difficult for the sperm to fertilize the egg. If there are semen abnormalities then it is very important to see an Infertility Specialist for solutions to the problems and internal health problems.

Mysterious Infertility: This means that even after examining the common causes, the real cause of infertility could not be found.

Genetic Disorders: If you or your partner is at risk of passing on a genetic disorder to your child, then you may be a victim of Preimplantation Genetic Testing. It is a process that includes IVF. After the eggs are formed and fertilized, they are screened for certain genetic problems. However, it does not address all genetic problems. Embryos that are not found to have problems can be transferred to the uterus.

Protecting fertility during cancer or other serious diseases

If you are about to undergo cancer treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy, it can harm your fertility. In such a situation, IVF can be an option to protect fertility. Eggs can be removed from the ovaries of women, which can be kept for later use. Or the eggs can be fertilized and made into embryos.
