Nigeria patient underwent femur transplant in Delhi, thigh bone was damaged

Doctors at a private hospital in Delhi have performed a high-risk and rare surgery for a total femur transplant (thigh bone). In which the patient’s entire thigh bone, a knee and a part of the hip were included. The patient is a resident of Nigeria. His tumor was being treated for the last 12 years. The patient had two surgeries in South Africa in 2010, followed by a mega prosthesis in 2013 at Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital to remove the tumor.

During that time the patient was treated and operated here, but for the last few months, he was also having trouble in walking. In such a situation, all his investigations were done. Reports revealed that he required a total femur replacement prosthesis. In such a situation, he was immediately admitted to the hospital and surgery was done on the same day. The patient underwent total femur replacement in a 5-hour long procedure.

What is Femur Replacement Surgery

Dr. Yash Gulati, Senior Consultant Orthopedics, Joint Replacement and Spine Department of Apollo Hospitals, and a team of other surgeons performed this surgery together. Dr Gulati said that this surgery was high risk. This is because in this part of the patient’s body, many surgeries had been done before and in this part, a large tumor had been operated on three times, as well as a total of 5 surgeries were done earlier also. The patient was not able to walk for several months. In this surgery, his thigh bone, a knee and hip have been transplanted. There are very few cases where the patient needs to have femur surgery. With increasing age, the risk of surgery also increases, but due to the hard work of the team of doctors, this operation has been successful.

The patient has been discharged from the hospital

Dr Gulati told that the surgery was a big challenge due to lack of tissue support, but it was the last resort. The patient’s surgery is successful and he has been discharged from the hospital. He is now able to walk. However, physiotherapy will be done for a few months now. Because physiotherapy is very important after this type of surgery. After a full session of therapy, it is expected that he will be able to lead a normal life.
