Dr Sumit Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine Specialist and General Physician, Sarvodaya Hospital and Research Center said that drinking polluted water can lead to many infections. “Contaminated water and lack of sanitation can lead to diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio,” he said.

These diseases are at risk

Cholera – In this disease the digestive system gets disturbed and in its most severe cases dehydration can occur and the kidneys can stop working due to which it can prove to be very fatal.

Diarrhea – Abdominal pain, fever, nausea and headache are the most common symptoms of diarrhea. It can also cause premature death, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Salmonellosis- Responsible for inflammation in the intestinal tract, it can lead to early death if not treated properly.

Shigellosis – Another disease affecting the digestive system, shigellosis can damage the lining of the intestines and cause abdominal cramps, vomiting and bloody stools.

Viruses develop rapidly even in contaminated water as it proves conducive to their reproduction. Consuming this water once can lead to the following diseases:

Hepatitis – Loss of appetite, extreme restlessness, fatigue, fever and jaundice are the symptoms of hepatitis A. Due to this, premature death can also occur.

Encephalitis – spread by the Culex mosquito that lays eggs in polluted water, often does not cause symptoms – but it can cause coma and paralysis (paralysis) in susceptible individuals.

Polio- Poliomyelitis causes sore throat, constipation or diarrhea and fever, while in severe cases the sufferer may even reach a state of unconsciousness.

Gastroenteritis – This disease includes adenovirus, calicivirus and rotavirus. Its symptoms are- headache, nausea and vomiting. It can prove fatal if it happens to newborns and young children.

Can these diseases cause death?

Dr Aggarwal said that drinking contaminated water causes stomach infection which can have serious consequences. “If these infections are not treated, the victim may even die.”

There have been many cases of death due to drinking contaminated water in India.

On 19 July 2022, the Odisha government said that Kashipur diarrhea deaths were due to contaminated water. According to reports, eight people have died of cholera in Kashipur block of Rayagada district of Odisha and many people have been infected with the water-borne disease. Cholera cases have been reported in six out of 8 panchayats of Kashipur.

Vadodara city is facing the problem of water pollution. Many people are getting sick by drinking contaminated water and a twenty-year-old girl has died due to this.
