Javed Akhtar and Gulzar’s friendship has been going on for 50 years, when and how was the first meeting

The example of friendship of some people is given in Bollywood. Javed Akhtar and Gulzar Sahab are one of them. The friendship of both is amazing. For the last 50 years, this relation of friendship is still intact. Recently, Gulzar released Javed Akhtar’s book ‘Jadunama’, the title of which is derived from Akhtar’s pen name Jadoo. After this, the friendship of both of them started being discussed. Let us tell you that Javed Akhtar and Gulzar’s friendship started in the year 1971 with Ramesh Sippy’s film Andaz. Both of them met here. While Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan got the opportunity to write the script of the film ‘Andaz’, Gulzar was assigned the task of writing its dialogues. Shammi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Rajesh Khanna and Simi Garewal played the lead roles in this film.

Friendship started with the film ‘Andaz’

Javed Akhtar recalled the stories of his friendship with Gulzar Sahib at the time of the release of his book. He said, ‘Gulzar Sahab was writing the dialogues and we were writing the additional screenplay. The film became a hit and both Gulzar Sahab and I became good friends. We don’t meet often, but whenever we meet we talk for hours’ Javed Akhtar told that ‘we still write letters to each other. We talk about what we wrote and what each other read. The good thing is that I have the advantage because I remember most of the things and he doesn’t remember much.

there is no competition between us

Talking about his friendship with Gulzar, Javed Akhtar said that there has never been any competition between us. We have always encouraged each other. He said, our writing style is different from each other but one thing is common between us that we both write well. Our friendship is like that of Kaifi Sahab and Sardar Jafri Bhai. Many times I have praised Gulzar sahab for those songs which he wrote 20 years ago.

Gulzar learns nuances of Hindi from Javed Akhtar

On the other hand, Gulzar said that he often takes Akhtar’s help to learn the nuances of Hindi as he is not well versed with the language. He said that ‘I am not a very educated person. I had failed in college. Whenever I am short of words in Hindi, I call Javed Sahab.

Gulzar Sahab had reached for the release of Javed Akhtak’s book Jadoonama. On this occasion, Javed Akhtar called Gulzar Sahib the ‘moon of Eid’. Javed Akhtar said that he is grateful to him for the release of the book. He said, ‘Eid’s moon has a minimum guarantee that it is visible only once in a year, even this minimum guarantee is not available from them’. Javed Akhtar said, ‘I am grateful to Gulzar Sahab. He doesn’t move around much and I am glad he came here to release my book’
